How I Met Your Mother

Carter Bays ve Craig Thomas adındaki iki arkadaş, New York'ta yaptığımız aptalca şeyler ve arkadaşlarımız hakkında yazalım demiş ve kendilerinden esinlenerek diziyi yaratmışlardır. Bays'tan esinlenilen karakter Ted, Thomas ve eşinden esinlenilerek ise Marshall ve Lily karakterleri yaratılmıştır. Durum komedisi türündeki dizinin setlerinden biri olan, sıkça takıldıkları bar MacLaren's, New York'taki McGee's adlı bir bardan esinlenilmiş ve Bays'ın yardımcısı Carl MacLaren'den adını almıştır. Hatta bar çalışanlarından birine de adını vermiştir. Dizi 2030 yılında Ted Mosby adlı başrol karakterinin çocuklarına "Size annenizle nasıl tanıştığımı anlatacağım" demesiyle başlar ve 2005 yılına döner. Böylece diziye renk katan Barney ile Robin karakterleriyle ve ilişkilerle yaşanan anılar anlatılır.
